It's 3 am and the light's still on. Chris wandered out into the livingroom, blinking sleepy eyes to find David at the keyboard, hunched close to the glowing screen, long fingers sliding and tapping away at his weird flat board keyboard. He flipped through all kinds of diagrams, reading, looking, occasionally flipping to other screens to check on only God knows what else.

"Love?" Chris asked tentatively.

"Go back to bed," David said flatly. "I've got just one more thing here..."

In the past "one more thing" often meant that David wasn't back into bed until dawn's light. As much as David first said he was turning into a pumpkin at midnight, Chris had seen the slender man up late more often than he'd seen him in bed, other than for sex, before 10. And then the idiot would be up with his 8 a.m. alarm, cranky and tired, snapping at nearly every thing Chris did, but in to work by 9 and not home until 9 or 10 most nights anyway.

It wasn't any fun. The few times Chris had been able to say he'd be at the apartment for dinner, at 6 or 7, David had made it promptly, and then half fallen asleep during the meal.

Chris sighed, not wanting to push it, as he turned back to the bedroom.

David heard the sigh and growled. He took a breath to say something he knew he'd probably regret and finally David realized what it was he was doing. He stopped and took another breath. Then he said softly, "Come here, please"

Chris came, and David wrapped his arms around Chris' waist and sighed again when Chris' arms came around him. "Please tell me I need to take care of myself better," David said against Chris' stomach.

"You need to take care of yourself better," Chris said cheerfully and gently, but firmly shook David with each word.

"Please tell me that the work will still be there in the morning."

"It's going to still be there in the morning, David-san," Chris said quietly.

"Please, please, please ask me to come to bed with you because you want me back in bed," David asked, twining his arms around Chris' strength.

Chris sighed and held David as tightly. "Love... do you want to be in bed with me?"

David looked up and was stunned all over again by the hurt in Chris' eyes. "I'm sorry."

Chris pulled away. "I don't want you to be sorry... I just..." His fist hesitated and then whacked hard into one of the couch pillows and David watched quietly. "I just fucking hate it when you hurt yourself."

David nodded. "Then maybe it's my turn to ask. Please, Chris-dono, will you take me back to bed with you?"

Chris stilled and then turned back to David. "Well..." The tone of his voice turned teasing. "Since you ask so nicely... then... yes, I will."

"I just have to close these things down, will you please stay with me and make sure I do?" David said, the fatigue suddenly dropping into his voice.

Chris hesitated, and realized he didn't know quite enough to be able to demand that David just leave that as well, so he leaned his head against David's back and felt the quick decisive movements of the slender man beneath him.

"There," David said. And, finally, he stretched and Chris could hear the tendon's crackling, the sigh of pain in the older man's breath, and he had to close his eyes.

When he opened them again David was standing, and they headed to the bedroom. Chris burrowed back under the covers while he heard David doing his usual pre-bed routine in the bathroom, and then cold hands made him yelp as David slid into bed with him and wrapped long arms around him.

"How the fuck did you get so cold?" Chris grumbled.

"Decades of having no one to warm me up, sweet. Decades," David mumbled sleepily and cuddled in, and they fell asleep together.
